George Strait

George Harvey Strait Sr. was born May 18, 1952 in Poteet, Texas. He is an American country music singer, songwriter, actor and music producer. He is known as the “King of Country” or King George, and is considered one of the most popular and influential recording artists of all time. George was one of the first and most prominent country artists to bring country music back to its roots in the early 1980’s.
George competed as a Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association team-roping competitor. He served in the United State Army for four years.
His first single, “Unwound” was released in 1981. He has been nominated for more CMA and ACM awards and has more wins in both categories than any other artisit. In the 2000’s Strait was named Artist of the Decade by the Academy of Country Music (ACM), was elected into the Country Music Hall of Fame. He was named Country Music Association (CMA) Entertainer of the Year in 1989, 1990 and 2013. He was named ACM Entertainer of the Year in 1990 and 2014.
By 2009, Strait had broken Conway Twitty’s record for most number 1 singles with 44 to Twitty’s 40. He now has more number 1 songs than any other artist in any genre of music.
After Hurricane Harvey hit the Texas Coast in August 2017, Strait’s personal jet was used to help with the disaster relief effort.
