John Coffee “Jack” Hays

At 19, John Coffee Hays immigrated from Tennessee to Texas. He became a Texas Ranger, fighting many battles with Indians and invading Mexican armies. His most famous encounter came at Enchanted Rock where he made a lone stand against 100 Indians and survived. He also gained fame during the Mexican War, keeping supply and communication lines open between Vera Cruz and Mexico City.
