Herb Jeffries, born Umberto Alexander Valentino, is a musician, bandleader, movie star, radio singer, cowboy poet, pilot, and historian. He was the first African-American to become a cowboy star and appeared in Harlem On the Prairie and The Bronze Buckaroos. Jeffries also wrote and directed several westerns during his long career.
