Annie Oakley

1998

Annie Oakley

Phoebe Moese was her real name and she was born in Darke County, Ohio. Her marksmanship abilities surfaced early when at the age of 7, she fired her father’s rifle for the first time. It was said that by 12, she could shoot the head off a running quail. Chief Sitting Bull nicknamed her “Little Miss Sure Shot.” She joined Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West Show in 1885. In 1901, a train wreck left her partially paralyzed but she eventually recovered and continued her fine shooting.
