Phil Lyne

2011

Phil Lyne

Phil Lyne was born Jan. 18, 1947, in San Antonio. He is one of the rare breed of cowboy to excel in every rodeo event, winning a combined five world titles in three different events, Bull Riding, Calf Roping and Steer Roping. He also won titles in two events at the National Finals Rodeo. As an amateur he won five championships and 42 saddles, but didn’t own a horse. Lyne broke into the professional ranks in 1969 and quickly made a name for himself in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association after he was named Rookie of the Year. He won world titles in 1971-72 and then retired from competition. He came back to claim one last world title in steer roping in 1990.
